The vision of the People Flow project is to create a user interface that leverages passenger flow data and provides travelers with real-time information about airport congestion. This enables passengers to plan their movement more efficiently and avoid the busiest areas at airports, especially during peak travel times. The application not only provides information about congestion but also identifies the airport’s service offerings, such as discounts at various service points. Our goal is to develop ethical and user-friendly software that is genuinely designed for people’s needs – bringing significant value to both travelers and service providers.

People Flow takes user experience to a new level
The People Flow project focuses on improving the airport user experience by leveraging passenger flow data. Our goal is to provide airport visitors with the opportunity to navigate the airport more efficiently, avoid congestion, and reduce time spent in queues. The application assists users with security checks, check-in points, and other bottlenecks, providing real-time notifications and suggesting the best routes for a smooth airport visit.
The application’s concept is to guide the passenger through the various stages of the airport, starting from arrival all the way to the gate – “Curb to Gate”. This comprehensive approach significantly improves the user experience and reduces travel-related stress.
We collaborate closely in the project with several organizations, including Supersight, VTT, the University of Oulu, the University of Lapland, the University of Helsinki, Finavia, Kone, and Haltian. The expertise and technological know-how of these partners enable data generation and analysis for predicting congestion and developing services.
From background research to world-class user experience – People Flow leverages passenger flow data and prototyping tools for smoother airport movement
In the initial phase of the project, we conducted extensive background research by comparing existing airport applications and other services that utilize passenger flow data. This provided us with valuable insights into best practices that we can leverage in developing our own solution.
Based on these findings, we created a user-friendly application experience that takes into account the needs of passengers at the airport. We are building the user interface as an interactive prototype using the Figma prototyping tool, so we can test and refine the user experience before final implementation.
The passenger flow data collected in the project provides the application with the ability to anticipate and respond to congestion situations in real time. Data models created in collaboration with VTT and universities enable accurate predictions of passenger flows and queues, allowing application users to make faster and smarter decisions when moving around the airport.
