Go2 - Solution to the Global Air Quality Challenge

Go2 is a globally scalable mobile application that helps urban residents choose cleaner routes and make healthier mobility choices in their daily lives. Go2 combines air quality data, forecasting models, and user-friendly design into an internationally scalable digital service that provides a solution to the globally significant urban air quality challenge.

Starting Point

Air quality is one of the greatest health challenges in cities worldwide. Millions of people are exposed to air pollution daily, with effects ranging from respiratory diseases to cardiovascular problems. While air quality data is available, it is often difficult to interpret and scattered across different systems. A solution was needed to bring scientific data concretely and comprehensibly into people’s everyday lives.

Actions

We acted as a technology partner together with the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Through our user interface and experience design, complex air quality data was transformed into an easily understandable format for mobile users, and we piloted the solution in London. We were also responsible for architecture design, IAM and payment solutions, cloud infrastructure, and the technical implementation of backend systems.

Outcome

Go2 is an internationally scalable mobile application that enables users to navigate along the cleanest routes and monitor their own exposure to air pollution. Real-time data transmission, robust technical infrastructure, and data based on scientific models ensure up-to-date and reliable information. The solution combines mobility data, data collection, and forecast and historical data into a single user-friendly service.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

The solution originated from a co-innovation project funded by Business Finland, where we collaborated with the University of Helsinki, Nokia, and the Finnish Meteorological Institute. In cooperation with deep technology-focused MegaSense Oy and the Finnish Meteorological Institute, we developed the Go2 mobile application serving mobile users. We built a scalable Kubernetes-based environment that enables the application’s portability to different cities and infrastructures around the world. The Finnish Meteorological Institute’s urban climate models, historical data, and forecasts integrate into the infrastructure we designed and implemented, where scientific precision combines with scalable technology. The collaboration demonstrates our ability to operate in an interdisciplinary environment where research, data, and software development merge into a concrete, internationally piloted solution.
Metatavu has significantly advanced the development of the MegaSense Smart City consortium. Their end-user application combines the University of Helsinki's affordable and large-scale air quality measurement concept, the Finnish Meteorological Institute's urban-level air quality modeling, and Nokia's data communication solutions.
